i have a thing for... THE PERFECT DISGUISE

dated a friend the other day, i thought to look cool and wore my frames without lens to meet her. the funny thing is she couldn't recognize me!!

what these lens-less frames are doing to us when everybody is wearing them nowadays?!

glasses are something that i used to hate, they are my burden alongside maths, braces and pimples during puberty... sucks man. but strange as fate has brought this vintage trend back to life, i have overcome my childhood nightmare and figured i should give it a go - hence i bought my first pair of plastic frames.

my designer friends are actually all wearing them nowadays. however the first person whom i know that were and are crazy about them is back dating to 2000 when i first met my CSM girlfriend. she has all kinds of quirky, vintage, ski-look frames (with lens!!) and surprisingly each and everyone of them fitted her perfectly. we call this 'a gift' for wearing frames, which means she can carry any shape and any colour pretty well. this accessory has become her signature look, till now.

the shapes i can wear are quite limited. i am not good with frames that are too thick or too chunky, and i need to stay away from square or rectangular ones as they make me look like a man. neither do the john lennon ones work on me. as for colour, i love tortoise shell and earthy tones, but black is the easiest to go with everything so i got my first ones in black, still looking for a nice pair of brown ones.

i love checking the eyewear section in the American Apparel website, the brand 'Dead stock Vintage eyewear' is absolutely inspiring. although i can't really shop from them i would check out the latest frames from them..

found this collection of images from stylesight. as you can see this palette was not entirely new - they have appeared from the early years of the last decade to this very season. fashion always come and go, but some trends do last for a long period of time... i used to adore pastel colours in my uni days, using spray cans in various candy colours to create illustrations. the softness of the colours just blend together so well, it felt all dreamy and delicate. anyways, see them still around reminds me of my days in london... ahh...

i have a thing for... THESE PRETTY SPRING COLOURS

 Louis Vuitton SS12

3.1 Phillip Lim SS12

already seeing these pastel colours swimming across asos and topshop... even rubber hair bands???

this spring palette is so cheerful and candy-like. all that lace and peter pan collars... so girly and sweet. perhaps for us all who were possessed by the moody and depressing vintage colours, is it time to try out some pretty dessert colours and touch base with our feminine side??

i have a thing for... BRANDS THAT EVOLVED (1)

what does not evolve becomes extinct. according to Darwin's evolution theory, all must become stronger to avoid being kicked out of the game. this same theory applies to all industry, including fashion.

i always love to see high end brands transforming from their historical signature identities into a whole new young look. this action requires a lot of courage and inspires their competitors, that if the risk is worth taking. customers these days are always in need of surprises, new ideas and their likes constantly change with the economy, news, technology, celebrities, generation etc.

the spending power of the teenagers are certainly growing, compare to 10 years ago. think back as a teen, just starting to use my first monocolour mobile phone calling my friends, emailing from a regular pc, read news from newspaper/tv and checking out the new fall winter collections from shop window displays. these days? 6 out of 10 teens possess an iphone, multi-whatsapping and facebooking-liking friends' pictures all at the same time, online shopping, tao bao-ing, gossip girl-ing, they just don't get told what is new anymore - they have all kinds of devices that allow them to find out by themselves. and they blog about it. the platforms and ways to obtain various information is humongous. and if any brand doesn't provide the new stuff, they will no longer be interested.

brands that evolved - Pringle of Scotland:

SS2012 collection

Pringle of Scotland, a UK heritage brand founded in 1815, is best known for its gorgeously cosy knitwear and signature argyle. past fans included the original sweater girls: Grace Kelly, Brigitte Bardot and Jean Simmons; modern wearers will delight in the pretty details. since 2000, the brand has taken its ready-to-wear range in an altogether chicer direction, adding romantic but understated evening dresses and bouncing skirts to the mix; just the thing for a Highlands holiday.

working with Tilda Swindon as their ready-to-wear range icon is a great success as she totally matches with the edgy and unisex direction they are trying to portrait. with Alistair Carr as the newly appointed design director, the brand have been sucking up new blood, beginning their partnership with Central Saint Martins last year on an archive project.

i have a thing for... THE GIRL WITH DRAGON TATTOO X H&M

i remember going through the trailer section on apple trailers.com and saw this really outstanding and dark poster for the movie 'the girl with dragon tattoo'. i am always attracted to this kind of movies, related to curious, dark topics.

there are 2 versions of this movie, one was made in Sweden (2009) by Niels Arden Oplev. the other one, which i love more in terms of styling, was made in Hollywood (2010) by David Fincher, who directed Seven, Fight Club,The Game and The Social Network, which are all my favorite movies.

Rooney Mara & Daniel Craig as Lisbeth Salander & Mikael Blomkvist on Empire cover

the styling of this movie fascinates me. i am not a complete grunge look person but i do have a few pieces in my wardrobe if i want to look 'cool' from time to time.

and the great news is - they have decided to crossover with H&M!!! check out the lookbook  for this collection... i am dying for one of those leather jackets and denim vests and hoodies. and coat. and shoes. and pants. and i need to learn how to do that smoky eyes too. and the messy hair. oh dear.

Quote from Stylesight:
'A capsule collection designed by costumer Trish Summerville of the new American adaptation of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo will launch at H&M this Wednesday, two days before the film’s December 16th release. Lookbook images reveal that the line will stay true to protagonist Lisbeth Salander’s hard-edge aesthetic, with leather and denim jackets and pants, hoodies, grunge-y graphic tees and rugged accessories rounding out its assortment. In addition to the 100 H&M outposts that will carry the line, a pop-up shop located in New York’s meatpacking district (at 72 Gansevoort) will also house the merchandise; it’ll be open December 14-16th.'

i want to line up for this!!!
